On 19th December, 1914, the 1st Sherwood Foresters battalion of 24 Brigade, 8th Division moved into the trenches at Richebourg-l’Avoue in France where they remained until relieved on 22nd December. On 20th December, the day on which J W Maloney was killed, there was heavy enemy artillery fire on the British positions here but the expected infantry attack did not materialise.
